Prevent the Summer Slide with Smartick

Rachel is a former public school teacher turned homeschool mommy to four little ones. On her blog, You’ve got this math, she shares the fun activities she does with her young ones during the summer, as well as hands-on math ideas for upper elementary kids.

Summer is a time to spend time at the gym, playing sports, and swimming at the pool, as Rachel explains in her recent article. But she’s also aware that spending two months away from learning can be detrimental for her kids – and all kids. In fact, you may like to know that kids who practice math over the summer, prevent the summer slide and enjoy a smoother transition back to school, while kids who don’t may fall a couple of months in their learning.

“Keeping kids from losing knowledge over the summer can be hard,”  Rachel says.

Vacation days are long, and, as parents, there are plenty of things we can do to keep those hard-earned skills fresh and avoid the setback that happens during the summer months. Smartick Method is her plan for math this summer, and this is what she loves the most about the program!

“We are loving this online math program. It starts off with a quiz to assess where the students are, and then the computer decides where they need to work. Then children spend 15 minutes a day working on problems that strengthen their mental calculation and algebra. They also get to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills as they work through the customized lessons. Smartick has logic exercises….this helps them improve in logical reasoning and reading comprehension.  It is 15 minutes of math that is tailored to the needs of your child so they are not getting frustrated.

Not that children need to be consistently entertained, but the main part of the work is just children answering questions. As they get problems correct, they are awarded points. These allow them to “purchase” digital items for their virtual home. The points also allow them to play math games, which my boys have loved.”
