The days at the pool, the bright sun, the relaxed schedule… this is all coming to an end, but now? How are we going to break out of this cycle and start the school year off on the right foot? How do we help our children acquire good habits?

Here Are Seven Tips for Acquiring Good Habits for the Start of the School Year:

  1. Positive attitude. Communicating calm and serenity is a vital part of undertaking this new phase. The first few weeks are always the most difficult, but in the end, it always works out. The plan for achieving this is: plan and don’t leave everything to the last minute.
  2. Preparation. Getting your little one to participate in ”back to school” activities is a good way to awaken their enthusiasm for this new period and get rid of the negativity they may have had. Go shopping for school supplies together (backpacks, pencil cases, crayons!), browse new books, talk about the subjects they like best and what extracurriculars they would like to do this year…
  3. Reminiscing. Take some time to share and reflect with your little one about the previous school year. Discuss their strengths and places where they had a bit of difficulty in order to learn and have a solution prepared for any obstacles that may come their way this year.
  4. New goals. Remember that motivation and emotion are the ‘gasoline’ that moves each and every human, so don’t forget about your little one! Talk to them about the goals they have for this year. Write them down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere in your home so that they are reminded every day of what they are working towards.
  5. New life. It is fundamental to get back into a routine a few days before the start of school in order to prepare their minds and bodies. The most important thing is to adapt their schedules: times to wake up, eat, and go to bed should be adjusted gradually to the usual schedule.
  6. Nourish your mind. Three months of vacation is a lot of downtime for a little one and it is possible that some of the knowledge they gained during the previous school year has been ”erased” from their mind if they have not worked on it during vacation. To combat this we would recommend beginning to review basic knowledge with them a few weeks before the start of the new school year so that they are not starting from zero.
  7. The first day of school. Share this special moment with your child, show them the enthusiasm and excitement you have for them at this time and remind them that everything will be great. After school ask them about their new teachers, classmates, and subjects – it will be important for them to know that you are there for them during the school year.

And, of course, 15-minutes of Smartick every day helps acquire good habits for life! 😉
