In today’s post, we will see the main differences between probability and statistics. Both concepts are closely related to one another but a common mistake is to see no distinction between them.
But, before panic strikes, I want to let you know that once you finish reading this post, it will all be very clear to you.
Probability is based on the study of the frequency which a particular event occurs within a random phenomenon that depends on chance. By studying this you can find patterns that allow you to predict what will happen in certain situations.
For example: when you roll dice, you have a one in six chance of rolling a 4.
Within mathematics, there is also statistics. It is based on the study and analysis of data with the aim of drawing precise conclusions on random events. That is, to observe the events that have already happened to create laws that define them.
For example: If you roll dice 6 times and every time you roll a 4, based on statistics you could say that whenever you roll those dice, you’re going to get a 4.
Both probability and statistics are essential disciplines to explain the reality of the world around us. Both are used in various subjects of study and science. Geography, philosophy, physics, psychology…
To finish, I suggest that you try to identify in the following examples which belong to each concept.
Mario – What movie should we see?
Sophia – Toss a coin. If it’s heads, we see an adventure movie, tails we see a comedy.
Mario – We have the same chances of seeing each of the two.
Mario – Sophia, every time we go to your house we watch a fantasy movie.
Sophia– They are my favorite.
Mario – That’s because the only movies in your house are fantasy ones.
